HSNPH uses the latest endobronchial ultrasound technology – EBUS – in our lung cancer program and patient care.
We use EBUS for diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. Staging is more simple and timely, which means that we can determine surgical options and medical therapy without delay, for improved patient outcomes.
It is also used in the identification of infections and inflammatory diseases that affect the lungs, such as sarcoidosis or other cancers like lymphoma – anything that causes enlarged lymph nodes in the chest.
The new Bronchoscope and Radial Probe System from Olympus offers a highly specific and accurate approach to lung cancer staging. The bronchoscope has an inbuilt transducer that allows lymph nodes surrounding the bronchial tree to be both visualised and biopsied via direct needle aspiration. The Radial Probe System facilitates a highly specific method to locate lesions of interest within the bronchial tree, and take biopsies or brushings for cytological examination.
EBUS offers real-time imaging of the surface of the airways, blood vessels, lungs, and lymph nodes.
Those improved images allow our physicians to easily view difficult-to-reach areas and to access more, and smaller, lymph nodes for biopsy with the aspiration needle than through conventional mediatinoscopy.
The accuracy and speed of the EBUS procedure lends itself to rapid onsite pathologic evaluation.
EBUS is performed under moderate sedation, and patients recover quickly and can generally go home the same day.
